Considered in conjunction with facts regarding the prevalence of syphilis which have just come to hand, the figures just cited give one an insight into the tremendous influence of syphilis on the public health in general, and on the mortality from diseases of the heart, kidney and arteries in particular. The considerations to which I refer are as follows: Serologists, clinicians and syphilographers are agreed that the proportion of individuals giving a positive Wassermann reaction may safely be regarded as the minimum of infected persons in the community, for while now and then a positive reaction may occur in a non-syphilitic individual, the source of error is really in the other direction. Figures compiled by various investigators indicate that, both in this country and abroad, a very large proportion of the population have been infected with syphilis. Thus we have the following statistics for Wassermann tests made by the New York City Health Department: TABLE O. Routine Wassermann Tests in Various Groups of Individuals.--January 1, 1914 to October 1, 1914. No. of Tests. Positive. Per Cent. Some time ago, Biggs caused Wassermann tests to be made on all patients entering his medical service in Bellevue Hospital. These examinations disclosed positive reactions in twenty per cent. of the cases. Longcope reported on similar examinations undertaken in the Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, with positive findings amounting to twenty-one per cent.
